119 Evaluating the Quality and Readability of Online Information on Unspecified Kidney Donation

Abstract Introduction Living kidney transplantation from donors bearing no genetic or emotional relationship with the recipient, is known as unspecified donation (UKD). UKD can create multiple living donor opportunities and shorten national waiting list for cadaveric organs. Consequently, UK Donor Kidney Transplantation 2020 Strategy, has prioritised maximising UKDs. The Internet an established role in raising awareness, offering support, potentially influencing decision against UKD. This first study assessing quality readability of online material related to Method Google was used search following terms: ‘kidney donation’ one ‘unspecified’, ‘altruistic’, ‘non-directed’, ‘anonymous’ ‘good Samaritan’ well ‘giving donating a stranger’. Two independent assessors reviewed top 100 websites assessed their using Journal American Medical Association (JAMA) criteria, DISCERN instrument HONcode (Health on Net Code) certification. Readability Flesch Reading Ease (FRE), Flesch-Kincaid Grade (FKG) Simple Measure Gobbledygook (SMOG) scores. Results Only 6% displayed stamp. mean (± SD) JAMA scores 1.96 (±1.00) 32.34 (±11.19) respectively, indicate poor quality. FRE, FKG SMOG 52.92 (±13.62), 10.60 (±2.72) 9.64 (±2.22), reveal readability. Conclusions Transplant centres medical organisations should prioritise improving standards enables informed ethical decision-making when attempting expand pool.
